Operatives of the Port Harcourt Zonal Command of the Financial and Monetary Crimes Fee (EFCC), on Wednesday, 3 April 2024 commenced investigation of 14 suspected oil thieves alongside a Motor Fishing Trawler (MFT), Hawwau Tanko, handed over to the fee by the Nigerian Navy Ahead Working Base (FOB), Formoso, Brass, Bayelsa State.
The suspects and vessel have been arrested for alleged unlawful dealing in petroleum merchandise by the detachment of 5 BN Nigerian Military on 27 February 2024 round Fish City Rivers, Southern Ijaw Bayelsa State whereas on board Motor Fishing Trawler (MFT), Hawwau Tanko , laden with about 10,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gasoline Oil (AGO).
The Commanding Officer, Ahead Working Base (FOB), Formoso, Navy Captain Murtala Aminu Rogo disclosed that Motor Fishing Trawler (MFT) Hawwau Tanko was arrested on 27 February 2024 round Fish City Rivers, Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State, for alleged involvement in unlawful bunkering.
Talking by Navy Commander M. A Gada, Rago stated the Nigerian Navy is not going to relent in its effort in the direction of policing and implementing all maritime legal guidelines to eliminate crude oil theft, unlawful oil bunkering actions and different crimes within the Nigerian maritime area.
The suspects embrace: Kolapo Gafar, the captain of the vessel, Monday Aresonor, Rasheed Rafiu, Kubi . E. Wowo, Emmanuel Odey, Kolapo Abdullahi, Sunday Obasan, Kolapo Wasiu, Ilojiole Emeka, Owoseni Ehuwa, John Olowokere, Chima Edwin, John Akpan and Ijoade Tayo.
In keeping with him, “the exercise of the 14 suspected oil thieves and MFT Hawwau Tanko is an act of financial sabotage which the Nigerian Navy has sworn to not condone”.

assured the Navy and all the public that the suspects and the displays will likely be subjected to additional investigation and potential prosecution.
