The Rivers State Home of Meeting handed the Rivers State Native Authorities (Modification) Invoice into regulation on Monday by overriding the assent of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The Home, led by its Speaker, Hon Martin Amaewhule, made the choice at its 159th Legislative sitting held on the Meeting Quarters in Port Harcourt.
This was contained in a press release issued in Port Harcourt on Monday by the media aide to the Speaker, Martins Wachukwu, and despatched to newsmen.
It recalled that on March 13, 2024, the Home handed the Native Authorities (Modification) Invoice and forwarded similar to Fubara for assent, which the governor declined.
The assertion reads, “Decided to carry out its Constitutional duties, the Invoice was represented by the Majority Chief, Hon. Main Jack and debated upon by Members.
“Thereafter, the Home in accordance with the provisions of Part 100(5) of the 1999 Structure of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as altered, which empowers the Home to override the Governor, the place he withholds his assent; the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule put the query, and with a two-thirds majority vote, the Home agreed to override the Governor and handed the Invoice into Legislation. ”

The assertion added, “On a tragic notice, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Amaewhule, introduced the demise of Mr Fortunate Amadi, the husband of the honourable Member for Obio/Akpor Constituency II, Hon. Emilia Fortunate Amadi, and acknowledged that Members would pay a condolence go to to their colleague.”
