Russian Overseas Minister Sergei Lavrov on Sunday accused Western leaders of trying to militarize Southeast Asia to comprise Moscow and Beijing’s pursuits within the area.
“The USA and its NATO allies try to grasp this area,” Lavrov informed reporters in Cambodia.
He was talking at a press convention on the finish of the Affiliation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Phnom Penh, and forward of the G20 summit in Bali later this week.
Lavrov is representing Moscow on the G20 assembly in Indonesia after the Kremlin mentioned Russian President Vladimir Putin is simply too busy to attend.
Lavrov mentioned the U.S.’s Indo-Pacific technique, which President Joe Biden was selling on the ASEAN summit, ignored “inclusive buildings” of regional cooperation and would result in “the militarization of this area with an apparent give attention to containing China, and containing Russian pursuits within the Asia-Pacific,” Reuters reported.
On Saturday, Biden pledged on the ASEAN summit to assist stand towards China’s rising dominance within the area, saying: “We’ll construct an Indo-Pacific that’s free and open, secure and affluent, resilient and safe.”
Russia has been in search of nearer ties with Asia since Western sanctions following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
