Giulio Ciccone has claimed the stage-15 Giro d’Italia win, as Richard Carapaz retained the general lead.
Key factors:
- Italian Giulio Ciccone attacked from a bunch of breakaway riders 4 kilometres into the ultimate climb
- Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz survived an early crash to retain his total lead
- Australian Jai Hindley stays second total, seven seconds behind Carapaz
The fifteenth stage of the well-known biking race is an 177-kilometre mountain trek between Rivarolo Canavese and Cogne.
Italian Ciccone attacked from a bunch of breakaway riders 4km into the ultimate climb — a 22.4-km effort at a mean gradient of 4.3 per cent — and by no means regarded again.
Ciccone — who wore the Tour de France yellow jersey for 2 days in 2019 — had loads of time to have a good time, crossing the road one minute and 31 seconds forward of Santiago Buitrago of Colombia.

Spain’s Antonio Pedrero took third place, two minutes and 19 seconds off the tempo.
It’s Ciccone’s career-third Giro D’Italia stage win.
Ecuador’s Carapaz survived an early scare when he was concerned in a pile-up, however escaped unscathed and was pulled again into the peloton by his Ineos-Grenadiers group mates.
It was then a snug trip for the 2019 champion, who retained a seven-second total lead over Australian Jai Hindley as the highest contenders stored their powder dry.
Portugal’s Joao Almeida sits in third place total, 32 seconds behind Carapaz.
Monday is a relaxation day on the Giro.
