The spouse of Brittney Griner mentioned the White Home has not but responded to a letter from the WNBA star asking for President Joe Biden’s assist in getting her launched from Russian detention.
Griner, a 31-year-old two-time Olympic gold medalist and heart for the Phoenix Mercury, was arrested in February when she traveled to Russia and authorities claimed they discovered hashish oil in her baggage. On July 4, she wrote an impassioned letter to Biden asking him to not “neglect about me,” and expressing fears that she “may be right here perpetually.”
Griner’s spouse, Cherelle Griner, informed CBS Information that the letter to Biden was the newest effort to get the president’s consideration in regards to the Olympian’s detention. Although the White Home confirmed to The Related Press that Biden acquired the letter, Cherelle Griner mentioned the shortage of response from the president has been “very disheartening.”
“It kills me each time that, , when I’ve to jot down her and she or he’s asking, ‘Have you ever met with [the White House] but?’ And I’ve to say no,” Cherelle informed the outlet Tuesday. “I’m certain she is like, ‘I’m going to jot down him and ask now as a result of my household has tried to no avail, so I’m going to do it myself.’”
In her letter, Griner mentioned she has been “terrified” as she sits alone in a Russian jail cell.
“As I sit right here in a Russian jail, alone with my ideas and with out the safety of my spouse, household, buddies, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I’m terrified I may be right here perpetually,” she wrote to Biden.
Cherelle Griner mentioned her spouse’s phrases must be taken significantly.
“She might be the strongest person who I do know, so she doesn’t say phrases like that calmly,” Cherelle informed CBS Information. “Meaning she actually is terrified that she might by no means see us once more. You realize, I share those self same sentiments.”
Griner’s trial started final week, and the athlete faces as much as 10 years in jail if convicted.
