Senior Congress chief P Chidambaram on Saturday attacked the Centre for discontinuing the Maulana Azad Nationwide Fellowship, alleging that the federal government is on an “overdrive” to make life harder for college students from minority communities.
In a written reply in Lok Sabha earlier this week, Minority Affairs Minister Smriti Irani had stated, “Because the Maulana Azad Nationwide Fellowship (MANF) Scheme overlaps with varied fellowship schemes for greater training, the federal government has determined to discontinue the MANF Scheme from 2022-23.”
In a collection of tweets, Chidambaram stated, “The federal government’s excuse for scrapping the Maulana Azad Nationwide Fellowship and the subsidy for training loans to check overseas to minority college students is grossly irrational and arbitrary.”
Even admitting that there are “overlapping” schemes, is the fellowship and subsidy to minority college students the one schemes that overlap with one other scheme, the previous Union finance minister requested.
“MGNREGA overlaps PM KISAN. Outdated age pension overlaps MGNREGA within the case of previous employees. There are dozens of such overlapping schemes,” Chidambaram stated.
