Rghts defender and senior advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has demanded the speedy launch of the suspended Ijebu East Native Authorities of Ogun State, Wale Adedayo, from the custody of the State Safety Companies (SSS).
The key police detained Mr Adedayo in Abeokuta on Friday, just a few days after he accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of diverting the funds of native governments within the state.
Mr Adedayo made the allegation towards the governor in a letter he wrote to a former governor of the state, Segun Osoba, and repeated in petitions to 2 federal anti-graft companies.
He has since been suspended from workplace by the legislative council of his native authorities for alleged monetary maladministration earlier than honouring the invitation of the SSS on Friday.
Reacting to the event, Mr Falana, in an announcement on Sunday, suggested Governor Abiodun to go to court docket if he felt the suspended council boss had libelled him.
He cited examples of Mr Abiodun’s predecessors who had filed libel fits towards some media organisations.
Mr Falana mentioned within the assertion: “Final week, the Chairman of the Ijebu East Native Authorities, Ogun State, Mr Wale Adedayo, accused the State Governor, Mr Dapo Abiodun, of diverting the statutory allocations of the 20 native governments within the State.
“Shortly thereafter, the Council boss was invited by the Ogun State Command of the State Safety Service (SSS). Nevertheless, when he turned up for the invitation on 1st September 2023, he was requested to answer the petition submitted to the Command by the State Authorities.
“Within the mentioned petition, it was alleged that Mr Adedayo had instigated widespread acts of public disturbance and chaos in Ijebu East Native Authorities. Regardless that the embattled Council boss denied the allegation of instigating acts of public disturbance, the State Safety Service has determined to detain him on account of his refusal to withdraw the allegation levelled towards Governor Abiodun
“Regardless that the Ogun State Authorities has denied the allegation of funds diversion, Governor Abiodun is suggested to sue Mr Wale Adedayo for libel within the Ogun State Excessive Court docket.
