Nairobi — Kenya has been elected to chair the United Nations World Tourism Group’s (UNWTO) Committee on Tourism and Competitiveness, solidifying its place as a pacesetter within the world tourism trade.
The announcement was made on the first assembly of the committee held on the UNWTO headquarters in Madrid, Spain.
The Ministry of Tourism stated that Kenya received the place after two rounds of voting, defeating robust bids from Thailand and Malta.
“This vote demonstrates the boldness that UNWTO member states have in Kenya’s management and talent to steer the group’s agenda on tourism competitiveness,” Tourism Cupboard Secretary Alfred Mutua stated.
He added that tourism is a key pillar of the Kenyan economic system, noting that chairing the committee would enable synergy with different UNWTO members in shaping coverage, constructing partnerships, and selling greatest practices in tourism.
“We will champion initiatives that may assist in the creation of jobs, defending of the planet in addition to driving inclusive development that may be felt and be impactful inside communities,” he added.
UNWTO Government Director and Particular Consultant to the United Nations in Geneva, Zoritsa Urosevic, expressed confidence within the nation’s means to steer the Committee successfully.
