A ferry between New Zealand’s two essential islands that ran aground has been efficiently refloated, the federal government says.
Operated by state-owned enterprise KiwiRail, the Interislander Aratere ferry ran aground in Picton Harbour on the north coast of the South Island. It had been as a result of journey to Wellington on the North Island however, based on media experiences, hit the shore after a steering failure on Friday evening.
There have been no accidents though 47 individuals needed to spend the evening aboard, native media reported, in an incident the federal government described as “very regarding”.
Transport Minister Simeon Brown stated the Aratere had “been pulled off the shore and is now floating”.
“The vessel will now be anchored within the Picton Harbour as it’s safely retrieved and additional checks are undertaken,” Brown stated on X, previously Twitter.
Interislander administration stated divers that checked the ferry discovered minimal injury and decided the vessel was water-tight, Radio New Zealand reported.
Interislander stated the ferry shall be introduced again into port on Sunday whereas an investigation continues.
KiwiRail says the fleet ferries almost 800,000 passengers throughout the Cook dinner Strait, which separates the nation’s North and South Islands, every year.
