A robust and probably harmful winter storm moved into Southern California on Friday, dumping heaps of rain and snow and prompting extreme climate warnings not typically seen within the area.
The storm, which has already left a large number in Northern California, was gaining energy and moisture because it traveled south off the Pacific coast. Forecasters on Friday stated it was tapping into an atmospheric river system, an enhanced plume of moisture that may ship giant quantities of precipitation.
A string of such storms pummeled California earlier this winter, inflicting widespread injury, flooding and greater than 20 deaths.
