The Lagos State Authorities has insisted on the banning of single-use plastics, notably styrofoam merchandise, including that enforcement of the ban to start in three weeks.
The Commissioner of Setting and Water Sources, Tokunbo Wahab, mentioned this in a press release on Thursday after assembly with stakeholders from the manufacturing and meals service sector.
He mentioned that regardless of the State regardless of the State pronouncement of the ban over 3 years in the past, producers are nonetheless producing it.
In line with Wahab, authorities has determined to take a daring step to cease using the plastic completely, notably styrofoam.
- “At a consultative assembly of the Lagos State Ministry of the Setting and Water Sources with representatives of the Producers Affiliation of Nigeria (MAN) and Restaurant and Meals Companies Proprietor Affiliation of Nigeria (REFSPAN) on the Secretariat, the federal government has maintained that there isn’t any going again on the whole ban of utilization and distribution of single-use plastics within the State.
- “The havoc and destruction prompted to public utility by single-use plastics throughout and after the wet season is unimaginable. If the producers had been accountable sufficient to respect the regulation, the federal government wouldn’t have needed to wade into the matter.
- “The variety of lives which have been misplaced by way of the impact of using styrofoam, the destruction of the ecosystem and aquatic lives in addition to the menace introduced upon the atmosphere can’t be quantified.
- “The one moratorium that the state is keen to supply all producers and distributors of styrofoam is to delay the graduation of enforcement of the ban by three weeks after which the federal government will go on full enforcement of the regulation.”
Backstory
Earlier on Sunday January 21, the Lagos State Authorities introduced the banning of the utilization and distribution of single-use plastics particularly non-biodegradable Styrofoam throughout the state.
The choice to ban these merchandise follows the menace which such plastics are inflicting on the atmosphere within the densely populated state.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Setting and Water Sources, mentioned in a press release:
- “Following the menace which single-use plastics particularly non-biodegradable Styrofoam are inflicting on the atmosphere, the Lagos State authorities by way of the Ministry of the Setting and Water Sources is hereby saying a ban on the utilization and distribution of Styrofoam and different single-use plastics within the State with quick impact.’’
