On Saturday, Democratic Home Reps. Adam Schiff and Carolyn Maloney, as heads of the Home Intelligence and Oversight committees, despatched a letter to the Director of Nationwide Intelligence Avril Haines, asking him to “overview potential harm to nationwide safety stemming from former President Donald Trump’s storage of categorized paperwork at Mar-a-Lago.”
Citing latest experiences, the letter calls it an “pressing matter,” and notes that the paperwork seized included “11 units of categorized paperwork starting from ‘Confidential’ to ‘Secret’ to ‘Prime Secret’ and ‘TS/CSI’ paperwork,” that will trigger “exceptionally grave harm to the nationwide safety.” The letter asks for a direct harm evaluation, and a categorized briefing on the outcomes of the evaluation as rapidly as attainable.
Within the meantime, Donald Trump and his allies have—once they’re not busy fundraising off of his potential crimes—pivoted from claiming that the FBI planted the incriminating paperwork, to now saying that the paperwork had been all declassified anyway due to Trump’s “standing order,” and that there’s nothing to see right here. Besides—even when one accepts the entire “standing order” nonsense—the Espionage Act and the opposite two legal guidelines named within the search warrant don’t reference supplies as categorized or unclassified in defining the crimes.
