UNIBEN Student Union Saga

Amidst the anticipation of a soothing break from the buzz and struggle of a hectic academic session. The University of Benin (UNIBEN) was rocked by an unexpected turn of events that left the Student Union government reeling. On the chilly morning of April 13th, a memo circulated, detailing a disturbing incident at the senior staff club at the Ugbowo campus. Allegations swirled of a late-night gathering turned violent altercation involving prominent figures, including Olumide Akpata, a Labour Party aspirant.
The Student Union government’s response, while attempting to assert authority, seemed to overlook the wisdom of Jane Smith’s words: “Power is fleeting; those who wield it must never forget that the same hand that elevates can also bring down.” Their stance raised questions about accountability and humility in leadership. If not for the institutional support provided by the school’s framework, would such assertive actions even be conceivable?
As accusations flew back and forth between the SU and Mr. Akpata, the truth became increasingly elusive. Press releases from both sides painted conflicting narratives, leaving the student body and observers perplexed. Reports even surfaced of the SU’s alleged involvement in another violent incident, further complicating matters.
The Vice Chancellor’s as well as the school management’s decisive action on April 29th, suspending the Student Union government indefinitely, sent shockwaves down the spine of the whole students of the prestigious school. While met with mixed reactions, a significant portion of the student body voiced support for the school’s stance saying the union has been inactive in performing its main function of being elected into position and requested for the union to be shoved away.
However, just when it seemed the SU was steadfast in its defiance, a surprising twist occurred. A sudden change of heart led to a heartfelt apology to Mr. Akpata, accompanied by a plea for leniency from the suspended SU accompanied by a joint apology press release from three past presidents emeritus of the union. This unexpected reversal highlighted the importance of humility and reconciliation in leadership, demonstrating a willingness to acknowledge mistakes and seek forgiveness.
Yet, as the dust begins to settle, the burning question remains: Will the school heed the calls for compassion and fairness, or will the suspension stand as a stark reminder of the consequences of overstepping boundaries? The silence from the school administration only adds to the uncertainty, leaving the fate of the Student Union government hanging in the balance.
In hindsight, a prompt apology from the Student Union might have averted the escalation of tensions and mitigated the severity of the consequences they now face. Alternatively, a more diplomatic approach to addressing grievances with the school could have fostered a more constructive dialogue, avoiding the need for drastic measures.
