Your Twenties with vigour
By: Sylvia Amere
Ah, the twenties! This is when you’re supposed to transform from a carefree student to someone who has to worry about ‘adulting’. It’s like being thrown into the deep end of a pool when you’ve only ever splashed around in the shallow end. But here we are, expected to swim through this vibrant yet puzzling decade of our lives, trying to master it all with a mix of bold moves and a bit of good old trial and error.
So, why are the twenties so crucial? They say it’s when your mind is in its prime—like having the best data bundle when you need it most. You’re sharp, energetic, and ready to tackle everything from sorting out your career to figuring out who’s worthy of a spot in your close circle.
In Nigeria, if you’re in your twenties, chances are you’re still living with your parents, trying to juggle respect for family traditions with your aspirations. You’re told to seize opportunities and chase big dreams—yet, every family gathering might remind you that ‘the economy is harder than last year’s pounded yam left out overnight.’
This decade is touted as the prime time for taking risks. When you’re young, you’re less tied down by heavy responsibilities, making it easier to chase wild dreams. This is the time to plunge into your passions and fight for your future even when the path seems foggy or the outcomes uncertain.
It’s also a golden period for growth and learning. There’s a natural boost of energy in your twenties, spurring you to try new things, stumble, and learn from those stumbles. Being young means you can adapt quickly—changing your plans when things don’t work out without too much fuss, just like a well-played Nollywood plot twist!
Opportunities are abundant in your twenties, especially with mentors, peers, and various resources. In many workplaces, especially in Nigeria, there’s a preference for hiring young, spirited individuals in their twenties, which can be a great advantage.
Moreover, now’s the time to pick up new skills, forge meaningful relationships, and carve out your unique path. It’s not just about earning a living but making a life—finding love, enjoying profound, meaningful experiences, and building something that lasts.
Remember, staying true to yourself is key—don’t try to be someone else because “everyone else is taken.” Mediocrity has no place here. So, gear up, my fellow twenty-somethings of Nigeria, and step boldly into this defining decade. Let it be your launchpad for a bright future, spiced with Nigerian wit and wisdom. Because if not now, when?
This really gave a vivid description of what twenties especially in Nigeria is like. Thanks Sonia
